(2011-2012) When I first read the book by Kandinsky entitled Concerning the Spiritual in Art I was struck by a reality that up to then seemed self evident. Kandinsky writes that “every piece of art is a product of its time”. That small phrase left me wondering how my art could be a product of its time, if not simply documenting reality.
The past years the economical crisis has caused severe damage all over the globe. However, one country seems to have been monopolizing the media with economical problems getting bigger and more significant everyday. Greece has been in the eye of the hurricane. International articles have been published analyzing the economical problems of the state, the people of the country have been characterized as slackers, thieves and non tax payers. Our political system has been based on this common belief for decades. The same families keep leading and they are leading the country in a system where now it is clearer and clearer that certain positions are almost inherited and not won by true democratic means. In essence, a small elite exercises all meaningful political power. We have become a country led by Mr X the 3d and as in every similar situation the higher the number the lower the qualities for the position!
After the military junta collapsed in 1974, Greece created a hybrid, diluted form of democracy. Everything depended on connections. It is all about who you know. The corruption has covered almost every layer of our society and it has been feeding on it replacing democracy! The generation of my parents really believed in the creation of an honorable state with the possibility to become what you had dreamed of. But they never really understood this new model they had dreamed of! As a child I remember often being asked what I wanted to become in the future. When that future came I discovered that not only I could not become what I wanted but I could not become anything at all. My generation is the first one in the country with so many unemployed people and we are the dynamic part of the most creative age ranging from 25-45 years old. My generation has to migrate in order to find a better place to live and create. The public is deprived of real information, as television stations, newspapers and online news sites are controlled by the economic and political elite. Our society has been an enormous bubble that has suddenly burst in our faces. The saddest thing in all this is that during the recent elections in June 2012, the same politicians presented themselves as candidates. They recycled the same words and tried to persuade the public on their good will to save Greece from the danger… I felt like little red hood in the forest only there were lots of wolves and not only one… I did not need saviors, I needed change… Well that change did not come… Instead once more I felt patronized and forced to follow the triptych Country-Religion-Family!
My series started coming into form in late 2011, it was conceived as homage to the generation of my parents, the same one as our politicians. They have been pretending to be heroes ever since the collapse of the military junta but time has caught up with them. My heroes are old and they are afraid of everything that they can’t control. My models are my alternatives to the 1% of the local elite. I use them in order to demonstrate the decadence of a whole system. The heroes of another time can no longer save me as they have pretended to do for so many years. Now it is my turn to put them aside and take over… This country is not for old men!
